Nestled in the scenic lakeside town of Port Clinton, Ohio, Woody’s Boathouse & Gifts is charting a fresh course in the world of independent retail. Launched just a year ago, this nautically themed gift shop is already making waves with visitors and locals alike, thanks to its one-of-a-kind selection and warm, welcoming atmosphere. Drawing in anglers, holidaymakers, and lovers of the great outdoors, Woody’s has quickly become a go-to stop for those seeking meaningful souvenirs and standout décor.
In honour of Independent Retailer Month, we spoke with shop owner Dennis Stacy to learn more about the inspiration behind the shop, his journey as an independent business owner, and why MOVA Globes have become a standout feature in the store.
How did Woody’s Boathouse & Gifts start?
Woody’s Boathouse & Gifts began as a simple idea—to properly house a 30-foot wooden boat prototype designed and built in the late 1990s. What started as a storage solution quickly evolved into something much bigger.
After purchasing land and expanding the concept, the owners built a space that combined the boat with a nautical-themed gift shop. Six months later, Woody’s Boathouse & Gifts officially opened its doors on August 21, 2014.

Why are you proud to be an independent retailer?
Being an independent retailer allows the owners to contribute directly to their local economy while creating a business that reflects their personal values. With previous retail experience and a love for “mom and pop” shops, Woody’s was a natural fit.
What makes your store unique?
Woody’s focuses on offering products customers won’t find elsewhere. From MOVA Globes to vintage nautical pieces and carefully selected home décor, the store blends marine heritage with distinctive gift items.
Equally important is the personal touch—run primarily by the owners themselves, the shop fosters genuine relationships with every visitor.
How are you impacting your community?
Woody’s contributes to the local community by offering a unique shopping destination and supporting local initiatives. The shop participates in fundraisers, supports the Chamber of Commerce, and even hosts community events like a Nautical Flea Market.
Why should people visit Port Clinton?
Located along the shores of Lake Erie, Port Clinton is known as the Walleye Capital of the World. Visitors flock to the area for fishing, Cedar Point, the Lake Erie Islands, and its welcoming, energetic atmosphere.
How did you discover MOVA Globes?
The owners first encountered MOVA Globes in a Michigan gift shop. Instantly intrigued by the mysterious, self-rotating motion, they knew it would be a perfect addition to their store.
How do customers react to MOVA Globes?
Customers are consistently amazed. Many stand watching in curiosity before asking how the globes work, making them one of the shop’s most engaging and talked-about items.
They’ve also become a go-to gift recommendation—especially for those hard-to-buy-for recipients.
Do you have a favourite MOVA Globe?
Two standout favourites are the Satellite View with Gold Lettering and the Earth with Clouds, both admired for their striking visuals and universal appeal.
