Nestled in the scenic lakeside town of Port Clinton, Ohio, Woody’s Boathouse & Gifts is charting a fresh course in independent retail. Though relatively new, this nautically themed shop has quickly become a favourite among locals and visitors alike, offering a carefully curated selection of gifts, décor, and keepsakes inspired by life on the water.
In honour of Independent Retailer Month, we spoke with shop owner Dennis Stacy to learn more about his journey, what makes independent retail so meaningful, and why MOVA Globes have become a standout feature in his store.

Tell us a little about your journey into retail.
The path into retail wasn’t always straightforward. After exploring a variety of jobs—from working in galleries to crafting handmade goods—the decision was made to pursue something more fulfilling and sustainable.
Opening a store became an opportunity to create a space that reflects personal taste and values—something meaningful, welcoming, and unique.
What makes you proud to be an independent retailer?
Independent businesses bring a level of individuality and personality that larger retailers simply can’t replicate. Each shop reflects the vision of its owner, creating a more personal and engaging experience for customers.
There’s also a strong belief that “small is good”—smaller businesses tend to foster warmer, more genuine connections with their communities.
What makes your store unique?
Like many independent shops, its uniqueness lies in its personal touch. The selection reflects a single vision—offering items that range from playful and whimsical to elegant and thought-provoking.
Customers know they’ll find something unexpected, whether it’s a quirky gift, a beautiful piece of jewellery, or a fascinating object like a MOVA Globe.
How do you connect with your community?
Community impact comes through everyday interactions. Building relationships with customers over time creates a welcoming environment where people feel at home.
For many long-time visitors, the shop has become a place of shared memories—where generations return and reconnect.
When did you first discover MOVA Globes?
The first encounter with a MOVA Globe left a lasting impression. Even at a larger size and higher price point, the technology was instantly mesmerising.
Years later, when more accessible versions became available, it was an easy decision to introduce them into the store.
How do customers react to MOVA Globes?
Customers are consistently fascinated. Many are drawn in by the gentle, silent rotation—often stopping in their tracks to figure out how the globes work.
Even after years of display, the sense of wonder remains. MOVA Globes continue to feel magical, offering a moment of curiosity and delight to everyone who encounters them.
Do you have a favourite model?
While it’s difficult to choose just one, popular favourites include the Antiqued High Gloss and Royal Blue & Silver designs. New additions, such as the Antique Cassini Green Globe, are also highly anticipated.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name Joie de Vivre—a French expression meaning “joy of life”—perfectly captures the spirit of the store. Every item is chosen with the intention of bringing a little happiness to customers, whether it’s something simple or something extraordinary.
It’s a philosophy that continues to resonate with visitors, turning everyday shopping into a meaningful and memorable experience.
