In honour of Independent Retailer Month, we spoke with Cheryl Lucas, owner of Crystal Books and Gifts, to learn more about her journey, her community, and the role MOVA Creations play in her unique retail space.
How did Crystal Books & Gifts begin?
Crystal Books and Gifts began as a dream over 15 years in the making. The concept, name, and branding were all developed long before the store officially opened. After a period of unemployment—and inspired by the idea of believing something into existence—the opportunity finally came to life.
With support from friends and family, the store opened just 10 days after securing funding. Today, it stands as a long-standing fixture in the community, celebrating decades of connection and growth.
Why is being an independent retailer important?
Being an independent retailer allows for a deeper connection with the community. It supports the local economy and provides the flexibility to quickly adapt to customers’ needs and interests—something larger retailers often struggle to achieve.
What makes your store unique?
Crystal Books and Gifts is dedicated to helping individuals explore both the external world and their inner universe. The store offers a diverse range of books—from quantum physics and metaphysics to global religions and Native American studies—alongside music, jewellery, aromatherapy, and unique gift items.
This blend of intellectual and spiritual exploration makes it a truly distinctive destination.
How do you engage with the local community?
The store actively supports the community by promoting a wide range of ideas and perspectives. One standout initiative is the “Off the Shelf” programme, which highlights local authors.
Through events like the Downtown Farmer’s Market, authors are given the opportunity to present their work, helping foster creativity and local talent.
Why should people visit Grand Junction?
Grand Junction offers a unique blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure. Despite being a high desert community, it sits just 30 minutes from ski resorts and the largest Flat Top Mountain in the United States.

When did you discover MOVA Globes?
Crystal Books and Gifts first encountered MOVA Globes at the AmericasMart Atlanta show in 2013—and they’ve been a staple in the store ever since.
How do customers react to MOVA Globes?
Customers are immediately intrigued. The most common reaction is simple: “How does it work?”
Displayed prominently in a lit tower at the front of the store, the globes draw people in. Many visitors stop, watch, and then enter the shop to learn more—often returning later to make a purchase after discovering the fascinating technology behind them.
Do you have a favourite MOVA Globe?
A current favourite is the Ocean Blue Relief Map Globe (4.5"). Its design and accessible price point make it a perfect fit for the store’s clientele, especially those interested in both telescopes and globes.
