For this edition of our Reseller Spotlight series, we head to the heart of Canada to visit McNally Robinson Booksellers, the country’s largest independent bookstore. Since first opening its doors in 1980, McNally Robinson has grown into a literary landmark with two expansive, experience-driven locations that offer far more than just books. From curated gift selections to community-focused events, this beloved bookshop has become a hub for readers and culture enthusiasts alike. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
A proud MOVA Globe retailer for over a year, McNally Robinson continues to enchant visitors with its unique combination of literary passion, artistic flair, and personalised customer service. We caught up with Angela Torgerson, Giftware Manager, to hear more about their mission and how MOVA Creations have found their perfect place among the shelves.
Tell us a little bit about your stores.
Angela Torgerson: McNally Robinson Booksellers is Canada’s largest independent bookstore, with locations in Winnipeg, MB and Saskatoon, SK. Established in 1980, each store spans approximately 25,000 square feet and offers much more than books—from toy and baby departments to a full music store featuring vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray.
Both locations also house the Prairie Ink Restaurant and Patisserie, creating a truly immersive experience where visitors can browse, shop, and dine all in one place.
Our giftware department is large and varied, offering unique, eclectic, and luxury items that are often hard to find elsewhere. We aim to surprise and delight customers with a constantly evolving selection. Some recent success stories include MOVA Globes, Kala Ukuleles, April Cornell Nightwear, Le Creuset cookware, and Corx purses from Portugal.
Where are MOVA Globes sold, and how do customers react?
We sell MOVA Globes at both of our locations, and customers are fascinated by them daily. Our staff frequently explain how they work, as curiosity is constant. The response has been overwhelmingly positive—people are genuinely captivated by their motion and design.
What makes your bookstores unique?
At McNally Robinson, our first love is books. Our expert booksellers, along with author events, signings, and community programs, create an experience that goes far beyond retail.
We are deeply community-focused, offering classes, events, and diverse departments that range from self-publishing to music and children’s sections. Our motto—“Imagine What a Bookstore Can Be”—guides everything we do.
How do you encourage customers to explore giftware?
Display plays a crucial role. Our team works hard to create engaging, story-driven presentations for each product line. Featuring MOVA Globes in our holiday catalogue also helped spark early interest.
Equally important is knowledgeable staff—being able to explain the product and share enthusiasm makes a significant difference in engaging customers.
What are the rewards of being an independent retailer?
The greatest reward is our shared commitment to success. From ownership to part-time staff, everyone takes pride in the store. There’s freedom to innovate, experiment, and evolve—making every day exciting and rewarding.
Which MOVA Globe is your favourite?
Previously, the Antique Globe was my favourite—but after seeing the MOVA Cube at the Toronto Gift Fair, I’m incredibly excited about its potential. It’s already winning industry awards and is sure to be a hit this holiday season.
What is the Espresso Book Machine?
The Espresso Book Machine (EBM) is an innovative in-store publishing system that can print, bind, and trim a paperback book in minutes. Developed by On Demand Books, it allows customers to create books on demand—hence the name “Espresso,” reflecting its speed and efficiency.
Next time you’re in Canada, McNally Robinson Booksellers should be at the top of your list. With its combination of books, gifts, music, dining, and community engagement, it offers an experience unlike any other.
