Just a short drive southeast of Houston lies Galveston Island, a historic barrier island known for its maritime heritage, diverse architecture, and cultural significance. Much of this rich history is preserved and celebrated by the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting the island’s most treasured landmarks and sharing its stories with future generations.
One of GHF’s standout attractions is the Texas Seaport Museum, where visitors can explore Texas’ seafaring past. We spoke with John Schaumburg III, Assistant Director of the museum, to learn more about the foundation’s mission—and how MOVA Globes have become a favourite among visitors.
About the Galveston Historical Foundation
Founded in 1954, the Galveston Historical Foundation has grown into one of the largest local preservation organisations in the United States. Over the decades, its mission has expanded to include community redevelopment, public education, historic preservation advocacy, and maritime stewardship.
Today, GHF represents more than 2,000 members from across Texas and beyond, playing a vital role in preserving the island’s cultural and economic legacy.
Among its notable historic sites are the 1877 Barque ELISSA and the 1892 Bishop’s Palace, both of which attract visitors from around the world.

Where Can You Find MOVA Globes?
MOVA Globes are available at GHF’s retail store, “Eighteen Seventy One”, located in Galveston’s Strand National Historic Landmark District, as well as in the Texas Seaport Museum Shop.
Purchases from these locations directly support the preservation and revitalisation of Galveston Island.
What Makes MOVA Globes Special?
Visitors are naturally drawn to MOVA Globes, often stopping to watch their silent rotation in fascination. The unique technology behind the globes sparks curiosity and conversation, making them both an educational and decorative highlight.
For many, the globes offer a meaningful connection to the museum experience—especially when learning about the global voyages of the historic tall ship ELISSA. They also serve as an engaging way to introduce children to geography and exploration.
How Can You Support the Foundation?
There are many ways to get involved with the Galveston Historical Foundation:
- Visit historic sites such as Bishop’s Palace, the ELISSA, and Pier 21 Theater
- Become a member of GHF
- Volunteer at events like Dickens on the Strand or the Historic Homes Tour
