Earth Day Stories: Giving Back to the Earth
Celebrating everyday environmental heroes and small actions with big meaning
Happy belated Earth Day! Now in its 45th year, Earth Day has become one of the world’s most important events dedicated to raising awareness about our planet. What began as a “national teach-in” in the US has since led to pivotal environmental milestones such as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Water Act.
To honour the occasion, we recently hosted a giveaway contest, asking MOVA fans to share how they give back to the Earth. The responses we received were inspiring, heartfelt, and a powerful reminder that green living can take many forms—big or small.
Here are some of our favourite Earth Day stories and tips from our wonderful community:
🌍 Thinking of the Earth
“I’ve spent the last 10 years working at environmental education camps, teaching children about the natural world. I focus on sparking curiosity rather than lecturing. I believe wonder is the first step towards change.”
— Jen Cole (Earth Day Contest Winner)
“I feel responsible for the planet that gave me life. I’ve adopted an elephant and a tiger through WWF. I believe all animals deserve to exist—and I want future generations to experience them too.”
— Christian Davis
“From reducing thermostat use and skipping the occasional shower, to recycling and driving a fuel-efficient car—I try to approach every decision with creativity and care for the Earth.”
— Stephen Bristow
“I’m teaching my grandchildren to be Earth’s future stewards—about global warming, sustainable choices, and the importance of protecting our fragile biosphere.”
— Irene Menge
🏡 Earth Day at Home
“I plant native species in my garden. It supports pollinators and brings local wildlife back into balance with the land. It’s my way of saying thank you to my region.”
— Donna Cohen
“We grow and buy organic fruits and veg, compost food and garden waste, and use natural pest control. Every spring we join a coastal clean-up near our local beach.”
— Stacy Giacosa-Bauer
“We’ve cut our household rubbish in half by recycling absolutely everything possible. It’s become a bit of a family competition—we have massive sorting bins in the garage, and everyone’s in on it!”
— Jeanette Schroeder
🚮 Earth Day Outside
“We helped our son’s scout group clean up the grounds of their local meeting hall. Eight hours of litter-picking may not be glamorous, but it made a huge impact.”
— Sarah Graff
“I take my car to a professional car wash instead of washing it at home. They use recycled water, and it keeps pollutants like oil and antifreeze out of our waterways.”
— Dave Taube
“I investigated my school’s paper waste—over 100,000 sheets a year! I proposed a new system and won a sustainability challenge. Now we’re actively reducing paper use and improving our recycling process.”
— Kourosh Zakeri
🌱 Earth Day Is Every Day
These stories remind us that there’s no one way to live sustainably. From teaching children and planting native species, to supporting wildlife and reducing everyday waste—small actions make a real difference.
Even though Earth Day has passed, its message continues. At MOVA, we believe in celebrating Earth every day, and we were proud to showcase our eco-powered MOVA Globes at the San Diego EarthFair earlier this week.
