Globes and Art: Q&A with Wendy Gold

Globes and Art: Q&A with Wendy Gold

When it comes to transforming everyday objects into captivating works of art, Wendy Gold stands out as a true innovator. Known for her whimsical, vintage-inspired decoupage globe designs, Wendy has turned upcycled décor into a powerful form of storytelling. Her company, ImagineNations™, launched in 2010 and quickly became a favourite among collectors and art enthusiasts alike.

So when we set out to expand our MOVArt series, collaborating with Wendy felt like a natural fit. The result is the enchanting Butterfly MOVA Globe—a beautiful fusion of fine art and MOVA’s signature rotating technology. We spoke with Wendy to learn more about her journey, creative process, and inspirations.

From Unexpected Beginnings to Artistic Innovation

Wendy’s artistic journey began with unconventional canvases. In 2001, she launched her first business, creating decoupage art on unexpected surfaces—even toilet seats. This bold and playful approach allowed her to experiment freely with imagery and storytelling.

Later, she expanded into decorative bathroom scales before taking a break during pregnancy. In 2010, a chance encounter with a vintage globe at a flea market sparked a new direction—and ImagineNations™ was born.

Reimagining Vintage Globes

Wendy was drawn to antique globes because many were no longer geographically accurate. This gave her the freedom to transform them into entirely new worlds—layering imagery that felt both nostalgic and imaginative.

Her experience working with curved surfaces made globes the perfect medium for her evolving artistic style.

The Creative Process Behind Each Design

Every piece begins with the globe itself. Wendy sources vintage globes from flea markets, online marketplaces, and specialty shops—often collecting dozens at a time.

From there, she carefully selects or creates imagery, using a combination of found vintage materials and digital design. Placement and composition are refined through trial and error to ensure the final piece feels cohesive from every angle.

On average, each globe takes between 4 to 8 hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the design.

Custom Creations and Meaningful Stories

Wendy also creates custom globes, many of which carry deep personal significance. From memorial pieces to themed designs based on hobbies or travel, each custom project reflects a unique story.

Her work demonstrates that globes are not just decorative objects—they can also serve as deeply personal expressions of memory, identity, and imagination.

Bringing Movement to Art with MOVA

Wendy’s collaboration with MOVA introduced an entirely new dimension to her work. While her original pieces were static, MOVA’s rotating technology allowed her designs to come alive.

The Butterfly MOVA Globe is a perfect example—its delicate imagery enhanced by continuous motion, creating the illusion that butterflies are gently flying around the globe.

Looking Ahead

Wendy continues to explore new creative directions, including pin globes and maps that allow people to track their travels visually. As always, her work evolves with inspiration—wherever it may lead next.
